I never really have a reason to visit Rockefeller Center, and I would say I actually avoid it’s crowds… aside from the annual obligatory Christmas Tree photo that we are all guilty of snapping. However, I recently discovered my new reason for visiting more often than I ever thought I would: during the summer months, the famous ice skating rink transforms into the Summer Garden & Bar, which actually feels like a tropical resort!
In lieu of the Christmas tree that adorns Rockefeller Center during the holiday season, Jeff Koons’s ‘Split-Rocker’ work of art has been standing in its place this summer. The flowering sculpture stands over 37 feet tall, but you really need to see it in person to feel how big it is! You can read more about the piece of art here.
The Summer Garden & Bar is a great spot to grab lunch away from the office, or to sit for happy hour and relax with friends. The music that’s playing combined with the sound of the waterfall in the background really made me feel like I was on a mini-vacation. We ordered the Raspberry Lychee Smash and the Frozen Lemonade, and they were both good choices.
We ordered the Summer Garden Signature Guacamole, Tomato Watermelon Salad, and Summer Squash Kebabs… the portions were perfect for sharing and everything was tasty. The dessert options sounded so delicious, but we were so stuffed we had to pass! Before we left we took some photos by the fountain…sometimes I love being a tourist in my own city!
