It’s the holiday season, and that means we will be sharing way more sweet treats than usual. We can’t think of anything more fitting this week than creating a treat just for our dogs. Minnie loved these festive Apple Mint biscuits and we loved watching her eat them! These treats are made with brown rice flour which is easier to digest than regular refined flours. They make a great gift and are also a nice stocking stuffer for your own pooch!
- 2 1/2 cups brown rice flour (organic is a plus)
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup organic (gluten free) apple sauce
- 2 tbsp chopped mint leaves
- 1 tbsp chopped parsley (this helps your pet’s breath to stay fresh!)
- 2 tbsp evaporated milk
- 1/4 tsp sea salt
- Spinach powder for color, to your liking (if you don’t mind using food coloring, that works as well)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In a food processor, combine the apple sauce with the mint, parsley and spinach powder until smooth. Then, in a large mixing bowl, whisk the eggs with the evaporated milk, salt and applesauce mixture until smooth. You can add as much spinach powder/green food coloring as you like, and keep in mind that the color will lighten a bit once you incorporate all the flour.
Once your ingredients are well mixed, slowly incorporate the brown rice flour, mixing and folding the dough with a spatula as you go. When all the flour is added, the dough will be dry and stiff. Once the dough is an even texture throughout, roll it out onto a flat floured surface until it is about 1/4-1/2 inch thick. We used small cookie cutters in heart and dog-themed shapes, and also used a ‘K9 Cakery’ silicone baking mold to make perfect bone shapes. Place your treats on a baking sheet and place in the oven for 30-40 minutes depending on how large they are. Halfway through baking, you can remove them from the oven and flip them over so they cook evenly.
This recipe makes 50 medium dog biscuits, but if your treats are small, you will get even more.
