As residents of New York, midtown is not our favorite area of the city, by far. The chaos that surrounds the Times Square area usually keeps us far away. On the other hand, though, midtown is extremely convenient, as every area of Manhattan you may want to visit is typically just a quick walk or subway ride away.
So, how do you achieve Central location when staying in Manhattan, along with a break from the touristy commotion of the area, all while keeping your pooch happy? It’s simple: The Element hotel in Times Square West.
We literally have nothing bad to say about this hotel. They are pet friendly (as long as your dog is under 50 lbs) which is one of the first things we look for when traveling with Minnie. And in this case, the reason why we were traveling in the first place was to escape the flood that was downtown Manhattan after Hurricane Sandy, to which they were completely understanding and accommodating to all of our needs. The fact that the hotel is located on 8th Avenue completely minimizes the touristy hustle and bustle that is so characteristic of midtown.
There’s just something about this hotel that made us feel happy, and that’s saying a lot given the circumstances under which we were traveling. Perhaps it was the kitchenette that is standard in every room of the hotel, or the complimentary coffee, tea, hot chocolate and citrus-infused water available 24/7 in the lobby that helped us feel like we were living in a home away from home. Or perhaps it was the luxurious Rainforest shower and the magnificent city view that had us leaving our troubles behind. Nonetheless, this hotel is extremely comfortable and feels like it’s filled with positive energy.
The Element is designed with the environment in mind, as they make many efforts to respect our planet and even bring a little nature into its decor. When we arrived, we received complimentary fruit and mixed nuts which we appreciated as a healthy snack to start our day. The fitness center was great, and every nook and cranny of this place felt new and clean. To top it off, the wifi in the rooms is free, which we especially appreciated since we were not on vacation, but were rather just trying to go about our daily lives.
The Element quickly became one of our favorite hotels in Manhattan, mostly because we were able to take an enjoyable mini retreat from all of the sadness that surrounded the hurricane. Minnie especially loved our soft ‘Heavenly’ bed, and the fabulous view. The hotel also offers dogs their very own ‘Heavenly’ dog bed, but we didn’t get to try it because Minnie only wanted to sleep on the big human bed.
It’s hard to find pet-friendly hotels that don’t stick you on a less than par ‘dog-friendly floor’, and are mindful of the needs that go along with having your pet in the room (requests for service, etc). The Element nails it, and they really take the time to make sure you and your pooch are happy and comfortable.
